An amazing person lives in Nanjing, China. His name is Chen Si. Each day he goes to the landmark Yangtze River Bridge. Thousands of people cross that bridge every day. He has become the bridge’s self-appointed guardian angel. He has stopped 42 people from jumping off that bridge to their death. He stands on the bridge, watching people, wearing sunglasses and a cap to block the boiling sun. He says it is easy to spot someone who is suicidal. Such a person “walks without spirit.” Suicide is now the leading cause of death for Chinese between the ages of 15 and 34. At least 1000 people have jumped off that bridge since it opened in 1968. If Chen is able to talk them down, or tackle them down, he takes them to a nearby restaurant to talk and to eat. He says, “We have to teach people to love and treasure life.”
Today the Lord may cause my path to intersect with someone who is brokenhearted and in despair. Will I be ready to minister on behalf of my Lord?
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…” (Isaiah 61:1).
