The evangelist Watchman Nee had a new convert come to him one day deeply discouraged. He said, “I can’t seem to act or talk like a Christian. I’m afraid God will find me unacceptable. I can’t possibly live up to his standards.”
Watchman Nee replied, “See my dog over there. He is totally obedient, never messes up, knows what he can do indoors and what must be done outdoors. Back in our bedroom is our young son with my wife. He is a mess. His diapers have to be changed regularly. He is a messy eater, throwing his food around. But he, not my dog, is going to inherit all that we have. Our son is our heir. You are Jesus Christ’s heir because it is for you he died. We are his heirs, not through our good behavior but simply because of his grace, which we receive my faith.”
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
