Bishop Gerald Kennedy used to tell about a census worker who stopped one day at a small, unpretentious house and was met at the door by a weary mother. “Lady,” he said, “I want to know how many there are in this family. First, how many children do you have?” “Well,” she said in a leisurely fashion, “There’s Johnny, Matilda, Reginald, Charles…” “No, no, no,” interrupted the canvasser, “I don’t want their names, just their number.” Then came her indignant reply, “They ain’t got no numbers. They all got names.”
That’s exactly the attitude of God toward all of us. Even in this world of over six billion persons, God knows each one by name. Every person is designed to become a child of God, to live in intimate relationship with him. He is calling your name. Have you answered?
“Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” (Luke 12:7)
