ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD

The only survivor of a shipwreck washed up on a small, uninhabited island.  He prayed fervently for God to rescue him.  Every day he scanned the horizon for help but none was forthcoming.  With lots of hard work he built a little hut to protect him from the elements and in which to store his few possessions.  But then one day after scavenging for good, he returned to find his little hut in flames.  It had been struck by lightning.  Now he had no possessions and no roof over his head.  He was stung by grief and anger.  He cried out, “God, how can you do this to me?”

Early the next day he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island.  “How did you know I was here?” the weary man asked his rescuers.  They replied, “We saw your smoke signal.”

It is easy to get discouraged when things go wrong.  The next time your little hut goes up in flames, remember…those flames might be used by God for your good.  As St. Paul taught us, “All things work together for good for them that love the lord and are called according to his purposes.” (Romans 8:28)
