THE POWER OF ONE VOICE
Something quite remarkable happened at the 1999 high school graduation in Calvert County, Maryland. One of the graduates had asked for the privilege of offering an invocation. However, another student had objected. The school authorities worked out a compromise. No prayer would be offered but there would be a brief “time of reflection” that would not mention God. That seemed fine with everybody, including the American Civil Liberties Union. So, at the graduation, Julie Schenk, who wanted to deliver the invocation, asked the audience to join her for 30 seconds of silence. Suddenly in the midst of the silence a single male voice in the audience began reciting the Lord’s Prayer, saying, “Our Father who art in heaven…” Suddenly the crowd of 4,000 rose to their feet and joined in that prayer until it rolled like thunder across the room.
Sometimes one brave and faithful voice can change a group or a town or a state or a nation or an entire culture!
