HELP FOR THE HUMILIATED

When former Vice President Hubert Humphrey died in 1978, a memorial service was held in the U.S. Capitol rotunda.  Washington’s elite gathered to say goodbye to their beloved friend.  Former President Richard Nixon was there, sitting alone as if quarantined.  He had resigned in disgrace and now nobody would speak to him.  This awkward ostracizing of the former president ended when the current president, Jimmy Carter, entered the room. He walked directly to Nixon, shook his hand, and welcomed him back to Washington.

Newsweek magazine concluded that this simple act of humanity and compassion changed Nixon’s future.

It’s easy to cheer for winners.  But heaven smiles on persons who make a habit of helping the defeated, the discouraged, and the humiliated.
