Last December after one of our Christmas Eve services, a man I will call “Harry” lingered. I could sense that he wanted to talk privately with me. He whispered, “It has been 10 years since I was in a church on Christmas Eve. The last time, I was so drunk that I passed out in the pew. But Jesus did not give up on me. I have been a changed man since I invited Jesus into my life and went to AA. But I was so ashamed of my awful conduct on that Christmas Eve 10 years ago that I have stayed away from Christmas Eve services since then. But this year God seemed to nudge me to come back. I’m glad to be here.”

I pulled the man off to the side and prayed with him this prayer, “O Lord, thank you for not only forgiving Harry’s sin, but also for helping him join the rest of us sinners in praising your Holy Name. Amen.”

I’m so thankful that our God forgives and helps us start anew.
