Ron Mercier is a high school teacher and coach in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Amy McCloud was one of his students some years ago. In 2002, Ron happened to encounter Amy’s father and stepmother. They told him that Amy, now 35, was spending four hours a day, three days a week, on a dialysis machine as she waited for a kidney transplant. Ron, now retired, was touched by his former student’s desperate need. He asked a few questions and found out that he and Amy shared the same O-positive blood type.

Ron decided to give Amy one of his kidneys. The operation was performed in 2003. Both Ron and Amy are doing fine.

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
