Dr. James D. Hunter used to teach a Sociology of Religion course at the University of Virginia. Usually on the first day of class, Dr. Hunter would ask all the students about their religious background and commitments. One young woman named Barb said she was a Christian. Dr. Hunter asked her, “Which tradition of the Christian faith do you identify with? The northern European tradition or English pietism or what?” Barb was silent. He could see that she was groping for a response. Finally she said, “Dr. Hunter, I don’t know how to answer your question. I just know I love Jesus.”

Jesus declared that love would always be the trademark of Christians. As Scripture declares, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” (I John 4:16)
