For many years Dr. Elbert Russell was a renowned professor of Old Testament at Duke Divinity School. Dr. and Mrs. Russell usually spent Christmas holidays with their daughter and her family in Greensboro, NC. One Christmas morning the family arose at sunrise to open gifts. Then they sat down to a sumptuous breakfast. Dr. Russell’s very bright grandson Rusty was eight years old, and he had learned lots of things since he was seven. Rusty said, “Grandpa, I have made a discovery.” “What is it?” asked his grandfather. “I have found out all about Santa Claus.” “Is that so?” his grandfather replied. “And that’s not all,” Rusty continued. “When I get a little older, I’m going to look into this Jesus business.”

There was a stunned silence at the table. Then the old professor braced himself, looked straight into the eyes of young Rusty, and said, “And I hope you do. And if you look into this Jesus business seriously, he’ll get you just like he got me.”

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
