Sports fans all over the world still miss the great golfer Payne Stewart who was killed in a 2007 plane crash. But even as his family and friends grieved over his death, a light of hope pierced their darkness. In the year before his death, Payne had discovered a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He had been drawn to the church by his children, 13-year-old Chelsea and 10-year-old Aaron. After winning the U.S. Open that year, Stewart said, “I’m proud of the fact that my faith in God is so much stronger and I’m more at peace with myself than ever before. Where I was with my faith last year and where I am now are just leaps and bounds apart.”

Even in the darkness of grief, the Stewart family knows that they will see Payne again and that God will have all eternity to make up for what they will miss down here on earth. As St. Paul declared, “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Cor. 15:57)
