Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of California was a speechwriter for the late President Reagan. One day they were aboard Air Force One, flying from Washington to California. Dana was preparing a speech Reagan would deliver during an upcoming trip to Latin America. They received a report that one of their hosts in Latin America was preparing to make statements critical of President Reagan. “Don’t worry,” Dana said to the President. “I will insert some things in your speech very critical of that guy. That will allow you to cut his legs right out from under him.” “Oh no,” said the President. “Don’t do that. In my speech I want to praise him to the skies. Then if he has already said something critical of me, it will make him look like a terribly ungracious host. In fact, it may make him ashamed of himself.”
