Sometimes you see a baby happily sucking a pacifier. But when that baby is hungry, the pacifier is useless. Then only food can satisfy. Adults react similarly. Lots of things pacify by offering short-term amusement or diversion: sporting events, gin rummy, jogging, fishing, and movies. But we humans have deeper hungers that require satisfaction. We need to know who made us and what His attitude is toward us. We need to know if other human beings love us and why. We need some hope that we can be forgiven when we are wrong. We need some assurance that our life on this earth has meaning and will not end in some cemetery.

Until these needs are satisfied, the amusements of this world are about as helpful as a baby’s pacifier when he is hungry. Are you into pacifiers, or have you found something that satisfies?
