March 27, 2018

Several years ago the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, made public 1,300 letters the late president had written to his wife, Bess, over half a century. Mr. Truman had a lifelong rule of writing to his wife every day they were apart.

Since communication is at the heart of great marriages, President Truman set a noble example. Whether by phone or letter, daily communication is a recipe for marital health. And if we complain that we are too busy, we need only consider the demands Truman faced.

Great marriages are growing friendships. Each day is a unique adventure, a separate memory, an additional chapter in the deepest interpersonal linkage on earth.
