CASUAL PROFANITY

Some time ago I watched American gymnast win a televised competition. Over and over he said without a hint of reverence, “Oh, My God.”

One of the Ten Commandments forbids the profaning of God’s name. You don’t have to add the word “damn” to God’s name to be profane. All you have to do is utter a holy name in an empty, causal or irreverent way.

Profaning God’s name is so common in America that even Christians hardly notice. On TV the standard way to express surprise, fear, or joy is to say without a hint of reverence, “Oh, My, God.”

Profanity distances people from God. No wonder so many people do not feel close to God. That closeness could be restored if people would repent and resolve with God’s help to never again utter His holy name without awe and reverence.
