PREACHING IN THE DARKNESS

The great African-American preacher, Gardner C. Taylor, recounts a story from his days as a rookie minister in Baton Rouge.  In that Depression-ravaged era, he was in the middle of a sermon one Sunday evening when suddenly the electricity in his small church building flickered out.  Encased in darkness the young Taylor stood motionless, not knowing what to do or say.  Suddenly, an elder deacon yelled out from the congregation, “Preach on, preacher, we can see Jesus even in the dark.”

And that’s just what Gardner Taylor did throughout his glorious career.  He proclaimed the Word into and in the middle of the darkness.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).  He came to fulfill this prophecy from Isaiah the prophet: “The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:1-2).
