MY JOY REQUIRES A SYMBOL

In John Steinbeck’s novel “Burning Bright,” the character John Saul is a middle-aged man.  When his young wife tells him that she is pregnant with their first child, he is so thrilled that he becomes a one-man celebration.  Immediately he dashes down to a large department store searching for a gift for his wife.  He says to himself, “I must find some hard tangible gift.  My joy requires a symbol.”

When a Christian worships, the audience is God.   The Christian is presenting liturgy, song, sermon, prayers, and offering as symbols of gratitude and joy for all that God has been, is, and will be, through Jesus Christ.  When the Pharisees tried to quiet Jesus’s disciples, our Lord said, “If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” God’s grace is so awesome that we must celebrate!
